Joining The Digital World
This article aims to put the digital jargon that is often thrown around into an easy to understand format. Too many people assume that everyone has been using computers forever and all of these words are automatically understood. So it can be a bit of a challenge trying to navigate through some applications and guides.

First off let’s start with one of the most commonly used terms in computing the hard drive. A hard drive is the storage device on your computer, it is used for keeping your digital files in. If you think about it in real world terms it is like the trunk of a car. The bigger a trunk you have the more stuff you can fit in. That is exactly the same with your computer’s hard drive, the more Gbs you have ( Gbs are a measurement of storage space) the more files you can have on your computer. The amount of free space in your hard drive also affects how fast your computer will run. Just like if you have more stuff crammed in your car trunk it will run slower, and not accelerate as fast.

To put the storage into context 1gb of hard drive space can hold about 800 photographs OR two hours of standard quality video OR 240 digital music files OR thousands of typed documents. Unless you are really big on high quality video and picture files hard drive space shouldn’t be an issue for you. [/one_third]

The processor is like the engine of your computer, much like the engine in a car. The faster your processor’s speed in gigahertz (ghz), the faster your computer will be able to run.

Aliquam urna! Hac arcu aliquet! Diam aenean, lacus mus a risus urna ut quis, amet cras diam. Porta scelerisque montes turpis? Urna! Tristique, pulvinar ut sit et mattis in dignissim dignissim, augue parturient porta! Diam, nec elementum ac vut nisi a, penatibus a turpis?

Then there is the RAM, it’s hard to say if it can be compared to a car part, but if it could it would be the suspension. The ram is like a buffer, it basically defines how many things you can do on your computer at once. Let’s compare it to going along a really bumpy road. The more suspension (RAM) you have the smoother a ride it will be, and the better your computer will be able to handle the “bumps”

A big part of having a computer today is being connected to the internet. A lot of programs and services rely on you being able to connect to the internet. So it is important that you understand the basics and how to use it properly. The internet put in simple terms is a network, it connects people worldwide openly. There are few to no restrictions on the internet as a network. People connect to the internet usually via a browser. This is a program that allows you to access websites and people who are available on the internet.

Through a browser you can send people emails, check the weather forecast, view videos and photographs that are available on the internet and much more. Imagine the internet is like a big conference hall, with lots of people interacting and exchanging information. The browser on your computer is the door to that conference hall, it allows you access.
